I just added a information sheet on Global Eye Glasses.

Located in New York, the oddly-named "Global Eye Glasses" was not founded by an English Major. They do however offer a decent selection including a small number of designer frames from Gucci, the Armanis, and Dior...

I buy my glasses from a guy named Dan who owns his own shop/lab a block from where I work. Dan knows most of the opthamologists in town. Dan gives me a discount because I work in his neighborhood. Dan spends as much time as I need adjusting my new frames. While his prices are not deeply discounted I know he's going to help me out with a broken nose pad, lost screw or any adjustment/repair for free for the life of my glasses. If I bring a friend in he'll fix their Lenscrafters glasses for free too. And if you're walking fido when you drop in Dan will have a biscuit for him. Sometimes slow is good.

@anonymous

I think if you read a bit more on the site, you'll find that we're not all that interested in speed -- at least as compared to getting good value.

I got my last pair at BJ's. My son had broken the old ones, which I'd been nursing along for perhaps 5 years. I have a great D.O. who knows what matters, so while I get examined and fitted for new contacts annually, I only get glasses every several years. Yhis time my eyes had changed a bit, and I needed a stronger scrip for one eye. I couldn't reuse the old lenses (something the "standard" aka welfare/military shapes permit), so I was in for a whole pair. My final cost for a pair, and I could have gone much more, was about $110 incl. tax. I took pitures of myself for my wife to approve the frames. I feel I got a good balance of value and style. I do feel that getting to optical centers right does matter, as does proper fitting, but spring temples make the fitting much less critical than in the past. I like your blog, and found it from Boing Boing. Be well, good luck, and Happy Holidays!

Hey, interesting blog you have here. As a recovering ophthalmic technician and apprentice optician it's nice to see someone show people that there are other options than national retail stores. The reason that I got out of the business was because of all the BS stores and management were telling customers. I am curious though, what is your prescription? I like the idea of ordering glasses online but in some cases with complicated prescriptions it is best to have your glasses made with the advice of a good optician.

This isn't relevant to the post, but I didn't see a link to contact you directly.

Have you discussed insurance somewhere? I have really good insurance that allows me to get one pair of glasses per year for a pretty good discount. Do the online stores work with insurance companies? If they do, I think I could get a free pair of glasses every year.

If they don't accept insurance, I'm thinking of getting some new glasses just for fashion.

Even if they do accept insurance, I'm a little leery of providing the personal information that might be required.

Great site, btw. I really appreciate the information.

My insurance company will pay a large percentage of a $400 purchase if I use a non-chain store, but will only reimburse $25 a pair for chain purchases. I ordered my first pair of glasses from goggles4u tonight and will attempt reimbursement through VSP. Getting reimbursed $25 for glasses I paid $26 for is a nice deal.

I stumbled into this site and thought I should let anyone who happens to read this to beware of globaleyeglasses.com. This is Indian company that uses American contact so don’t be fooled by the addresses in New York and Georgia. These guys took my friend's money and held on to his frame and glasses for over a month, ignoring his e-mails and not responding to his calls and even request to return his glasses. After a month and two weeks, several emails and a call from AG's office, they sent him a bent frame with unaligned glasses with extra holes drilled and covered with glue. How on earth do you drill extra holes a on a glass and cover it with super glue?

One thing you can bet on with this company is that you'll never get what you paid for, if they don't convert your frame. Check out BBB comment on them. AVOID dealing with them if you can.

Wish I had read Andy77's comment before I ordered from Global. So far my order has been delayed and I probably won't receive it until almost a month after ordering.

This company is absolutely fraudulent. I never received my order from them. They wouldn't reply to my emails. I finally caught them in their live chat, and they tried to convince me to send them more money (!) to release the order I had already paid for in full.

Complete bunch of unrepentant scammers. Watch out.
